The Difference an In-House Laboratory Makes
When pets arrive at our emergency practice in distress, they are not able to explain how they feel. Our cutting-edge in-house laboratory allows us to perform a comprehensive range of tests on-site, providing the critical insights we need for accurate diagnoses and prompt treatment. Our goal is to get your furry friend's health back on track as soon as possible.
What Tests Can We Perform In-House?
Our in-house laboratory is well-equipped to conduct a variety of tests, including the following:
Bloodwork: We perform complete blood counts (CBCs) to assess red and white blood cell counts, platelet levels, clotting factors, and oxygen levels. We also offer blood chemistry panels to analyze kidney and liver function, electrolyte balance, and blood sugar levels, providing us with a wealth of information to diagnose underlying concerns.
Urinalysis: Urinalysis helps us evaluate the health of your pet's urinary tract, including the kidneys and bladder, and uncover various health concerns like diabetes, kidney disease, infections, and more. It is an essential diagnostic tool for sick animals, allowing us to rule out underlying problems that may be causing your pet's distress.
Culture and Sensitivity: In cases where our veterinary team suspects infections, we may take a culture to isolate the specific bacteria involved, if any. The goal is to determine the most effective antibiotics to provide your furry companion with targeted treatment for the best possible outcomes. While we collect the samples in-house, our partner laboratory typically runs the tests. Once we receive the results, we will contact you, and depending on your pet’s needs, we may change antibiotics or continue with the current ones for a longer course.
Biopsies and Fine Needle Aspirates (FNAs): We perform biopsies and FNAs to collect tissue samples, including tumors or masses. Fine needle aspirate is limited in terms of the amount of tissue collected, but can be useful for evaluation under our in-house microscope. However, when evaluating larger pieces of tissue, we typically send them out to an outside laboratory for further testing. Biopsies and FNAs help rule out any malignancy or abnormalities, allowing us to determine the best course of action for your canine or feline family member.
Beyond Our In-House Laboratory
While our in-house lab offers a wide range of diagnostic tests, there are times when your pet may need highly specialized investigations. We collaborate with external diagnostic labs, as needed, to provide your pet with the best possible care.
